Omicron changes hardly anything
I have concluded Omicron does not cause more problems and does not justify fundamentally different solutions from Delta -it is not inherently more contagious (the South African wave is peaking way too soon for it to be inherently more contagious) and is likely not much less severe (it might be slightly less severe in the unvaccinated, countered by an increase in mild and severe cases among the vaccinated and previously infected). It does escape vaccines and natural immunity far more than Delta, which is what has caused it to spread so rapidly around the globe (thus creating the illusion of higher inherent transmissibility) and has simultaneously created the illusion of lower severity. Plan your expectations accordingly.
So far as I can see, Omicron changes only three things:
Mask mandates become more justifiable
Case counts become less reliable indicators of severe outcomes
Boosters become more justifiable, two dose vaccine mandates become less justifiable
Luckily, vaccines still protect against severe cases of Omicron, though not quite as effectively as they did against Delta, so Israel and Iceland are going to be fine. Wipe the sweat off your brow, and remember, it could have been much worse.
