Great article in the Chronicle of Higher education on a body compositional (and racially) White woman attempting to end school tracking for mathematics (which I consider simply inevitable -not more than a quarter of students can get a 5 in AP Calculus AB, and it’s a waste of time trying to make them learn it).
I never made it past 10th grade algebra yet I went on to law school and grad school. I get the basic shit is necessary but I don't see why students should be forced to learn stuff like Trig, calc, or discrete math unless they plan on pursuing a career that requires them. I think America wanted to compete with the Chinese and Japanese on math scores but in the process sorely neglected things like history, philosophy, classical languages, etc.

Agreed. It does make for a good IQ test, though.
